TGHRC Seeks Report on Death of Pregnant Woman, Newborn Baby at Khammam Hospital

The newborn child reportedly died shortly after birth and the mother subsequently succumbed while undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital, Khammam

Hyderabad: Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) took note of the death of a pregnant woman and her newborn child allegedly due to absence of a doctor at the Government Hospital at Gundala in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

According to TGHRC, Datla Vanaja (20), a resident of Shambhunigudem village was taken to the Government Hospital in Gundala with labour pains. It was alleged that the duty doctor was not available at the hospital at the relevant time and that a nurse conducted the delivery.

The newborn child reportedly died shortly after birth and the mother subsequently succumbed while undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital, Khammam. The relatives of the deceased allegedly attributed the deaths to the absence of the doctor and inadequate medical facilities and staff at the hospital.

The allegations, if true, raise serious concerns relating to the protection of the right to life and access to timely and adequate medical care in a government health institution, which fall within the jurisdiction of the Commission under the Protection of Human Rights Act-1993.

In view of this, the Commission deems it appropriate to take suo-motu cognizance of the matter. Accordingly, a report is called for from the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO), Bhadradri Kothagudem district for hearing on July 13 at 11 am indicating the facts and circumstances of the incident and action taken.
