TGHRC Asks DGP To Issue Instructions To Officers To Refrain From Threatening Complainant

The Commission recommended the DGP to issue instructions to prevent police misconduct

Hyderabad: Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has recommended Director-General of Police, Jitender to issue clear and binding instructions to all police officers in the State to refrain from threatening, influencing, or coercing any complainant pursuing legal remedies.

TGHRC presided by Dr. Justice Shameem Akther examined the complaint filed by G. Prashanth Kumar and another, alleging illegal detention, assault, and coercion by police officials at Santoshnagar police station in April 2018. After hearing the complainant (HRC 3064 of 2018) and perusing the records, the Commission noted that while the matter was currently sub-judice, the allegations of coercion and threats by police officers to withdraw the private complaint warranted preventive action.

Exercising powers under Section 18 of the Protection of Human Rights Act-1993, the Commission recommended the DGP to issue instructions to prevent police misconduct in such cases, ensure complainants’ safety, and initiate a preliminary departmental enquiry into the alleged misconduct.

The commission further directed that the complainant should not be harassed and be allowed to pursue legal remedies without fear. With these recommendations, the case was closed.
