TG-TMARS To Be Set Up for Traffic Management and Road Safety: CS

Hyderabad: Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju directed officials to prepare an action plan to address traffic congestion and prevent road accidents across the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits. He also suggested establishing a dedicated and independent system, on the lines of the Narcotics Bureau and the anti-food adulteration TG-SAFE, under the proposed name TG-TMARS (Traffic Management and Road Safety).
Reviewing traffic management and road safety issues with senior officials Secretariat on Thursday, the Chief Secretary called for extensive use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology to make traffic management more efficient and road travel safer across Telangana.
The meeting discussed road safety, maintenance of traffic signals, identification of accident-prone locations and creation of faster routes for emergency services. Jaju directed officials to strengthen traffic signalling systems in all cities, district headquarters, municipalities, urban areas and along the ORR. The municipal, police, transport and other departments were asked to work in coordination, prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and install required signalling systems by November and December.
Jaju said traffic management and road safety could not be confined to a single department. He directed officials to explore an Integrated Traffic Data Platform to consolidate and analyse traffic data from different locations on a common platform.
The Chief Secretary called for modernisation of traffic signals, stronger electronic enforcement and implementation of road safety measures in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines. He also instructed officials to take strict action against encroachments on footpaths. Officials informed him that 429 traffic signalling systems are currently operational within GHMC limits, with advanced signal control systems being used at these locations.
He stressed that technology should not be restricted to detecting traffic violations but should provide citizens with safer, faster and more convenient travel. Officials were directed to study the latest AI-based technologies, undertake pilot projects at suitable locations and gradually expand successful initiatives across the state.
