WARANGAL: Telangana student Thokala Hruthik Reddy, 25, died while trying to escape his fire-stricken house in Berlin, according to reports reaching here on Thursday. Hruthik, of Malkapur in Chilpur mandal of Jangaon district, had moved to Magdeburg in Germany in June 2023 and was pursuing MS at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences.

He died after sustaining severe head injuries when he jumped from his apartment building to escape a massive fire that broke out in the premises during the New Year celebrations.

Hruthik Reddy had completed his BTech from a private engineering college in Hanamkonda district. His father, Thokala Sampath Reddy, is a BJP district spokesperson, while his mother Karuna leads a local self-help group. His sister Sahasra is pursuing her BPharmacy.

According to local reports, illegal fireworks triggered a fast-moving fire at Hruthik’s residence. Trapped by thick smoke and spreading flames, he jumped from the building to escape. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died of severe head injuries despite treatment.

G. Ranjith Reddy, a neighbour, told Deccan Chronicle that Hruthik Reddy had planned to visit home during Dasara but postponed the trip, assuring his parents he would come for Sankranti. He was expected to arrive in Malkapur on January 13. “He was supposed to be with us in a few days. Now we are waiting for his body instead of him,” the neighbour said.

The family said Hruthik Reddy’s younger sister first received information about the incident. Relatives and villagers rallied around the family as the news spread.

Hruthik’s parents, relatives and residents of Malkapur have appealed to the state government and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to coordinate with the ministry of external affairs and the Indian Embassy to expedite the repatriation of Hruthik’s body for the final rites in his native village.

The Indian Embassy in Germany has been informed and is coordinating with local authorities. Officials have assured the family of assistance in completing legal formalities and arranging the transport of the body back to India. The incident has plunged the family and the village into deep mourning.
