Hyderabad: In a significant step towards promoting mental health and the rehabilitation of women prisoners, the Telangana Prisons Department has launched the Phyllis and Krystal Method Psychotherapy Programme at the Special Prison for Women, Hyderabad.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Soumya Mishra, IPS, Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Telangana.
“Telangana prisons department launched a psychotherapy programme for women Inmates in Initiative aims to strengthen mental health, emotional wellbeing and psychological resilience among women prisoners,” Soumya Mishra said.
The initiative aims to help women inmates overcome emotional challenges, manage stress and anxiety, develop positive thinking and build psychological resilience, she explained.
Soumya Mishra emphasised that mental health is as important as physical health. She observed that separation from family members and loved ones during imprisonment can lead to emotional stress, anxiety, sadness and other psychological challenges.
She explained that psychotherapy sessions would provide inmates with an opportunity to understand their emotions, cope with stress, develop a positive outlook and regain self-confidence.
Encouraging the inmates to actively participate in the sessions, she reminded them that their past does not define their future and that everyone deserves an opportunity to learn, transform and make a fresh beginning in life.
The programme was facilitated by Ms. Shaguna Sinha and Mrs. Shivani Sinha Sola, founders of Devas Unlimited. Dr. D. Srinivas, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, also participated in the programme.
The initiative marks another step towards strengthening a humane, compassionate and reform-oriented correctional system in Telangana, with a focus on the mental wellbeing, personal transformation and successful reintegration of inmates into society, she added.
