Karimnagar: Tensions prevailed briefly during the 135th birth anniversary celebrations of Dr B. R. Ambedkar at Karimnagar district headquarters on Tuesday after a confrontation broke out between student activists and local organisers at the main Ambedkar statue.
The incident occurred when members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) arrived at the venue to offer floral tributes. According to sources, members of the Ambedkar Utsava Committee objected to the display of organisational flags at the site, requesting that tributes be offered without party or group symbols to maintain the non-partisan nature of the event.
The situation escalated when ABVP members reportedly attempted to approach the statue while carrying flags, leading to heated exchanges between the two groups. The argument soon turned into a brief scuffle, prompting police intervention.
Police personnel stationed at the spot intervened and removed the activists from the premises to prevent further escalation. The ABVP members later staged a protest against the police action, alleging high-handed behaviour.
Despite the disruption, organisers continued the scheduled commemorative programme under tightened security arrangements.
