Tension in Nampally as BJP, Congress Protests Turn Confrontational

Police resort to lathi charge, take leaders into preventive custody amid duelling rallies in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Hyderabad witnessed tense scenes on Wednesday as leaders and workers of the BJP and Congress staged separate protests in different parts of the city, leading to a face-off and police intervention.

While Congress leaders took out a rally from Gandhi Bhavan in Nampally to Lok Bhavan in Somajiguda to express solidarity with the CJP’s protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, the BJP organised a counter rally from its state headquarters to Gandhi Bhavan. The BJP protest was aimed at Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, over their demonstration in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in the national capital.

Leaders and workers from both parties, holding placards, raised slogans against each other, escalating tensions in the area. Anticipating a law and order situation, police stepped in and took several leaders into preventive custody.

At Gandhi Bhavan, police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse BJP workers after they attempted to force their way into the premises, bringing the situation under control.
