Telugu Chargesheet Sets New Precedent

The initiative was spearheaded by woman head constable N. Swaroopa, who prepared and produced charge sheets in two separate cases entirely in the mother tongue.

Hyderabad: In a landmark shift in the policing history of the Telugu states, Dundigal police on Wednesday filed a chargesheet in the local language, Telugu, marking the first time such a transition has been made in Telangana.

The initiative was spearheaded by woman head constable N. Swaroopa, who prepared and produced charge sheets in two separate cases entirely in the mother tongue. Traditionally, legal and police documentation in the state has been recorded in English or Urdu, making this move a major step toward making the judicial process more accessible to common citizens.

State DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy and Cyberabad police commissioner M. Ramesh lauded the head constable for her pioneering effort. Senior officials noted that using the local language helps complainants and the accused better understand the specific charges and legal proceedings without the need for complex translations.

Dundigal police zonal officials congratulated Swaroopa, saying her initiative has set a new precedent for police stations across the state. The move is expected to be replicated in other wings of the department to ensure transparency and linguistic ease for the public, police sources disclosed.
