Telangana’s caste census gets AICC’s praise
The proposals discussed during Tuesday's extended CWC session will be further debated in the AICC general body meeting on Wednesday

Hyderabad: The two-day All India Congress Committee (AICC) convention, which began in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, hailed the Telangana government's successful completion of the caste census. The initiative, completed within just three months, earned accolades from national Congress leaders for its swift execution and commitment to social justice.
The convention commended Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and his cabinet for fulfilling the Congress' promise of conducting a caste census, made ahead of the 2023 Assembly elections. Telangana's efforts were further applauded for the passage of two key Bills increasing reservations for Backward Classes to 42 per cent across education, employment, and local governance sectors.
Although no member of the Telangana delegation, which included Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and ministers N. Uttam Kumar Reddy and Damodar Rajanarsimha, spoke at the convention on Tuesday, party insiders revealed that the state's caste census was a highlight of the discussion.
Speaking to the media after the session, Rajanarsimha said, "The caste census conducted by the Congress government in Telangana received appreciation in the AICC meeting. The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) discussed the need for a nationwide caste census if the Congress is voted to power at the Centre."
"Describing the caste census as an "X-ray of India", the AICC meeting stressed its importance in understanding the socio-economic and political representation of various castes. The meeting felt that Telangana’s successful model could serve as a blueprint for the rest of the country," Rajanarasimha said.
The AICC convention, ‘Nyaypath: Sankalp, Samarpan aur Sangharsh’, also focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots structure. With 2025 declared as the "year of the organisation," the CWC deliberated on giving more autonomy to district congress committees (DCCs), ensuring localised candidate selection, and enhancing accountability among leaders.
The proposals discussed during Tuesday's extended CWC session will be further debated in the AICC general body meeting on Wednesday. Senior leaders including AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi were present, as the party charts a course for revival and preparation for upcoming elections.
