Telangana Villagers Celebrate Harvest with Mango Tree Weddings

Community elders explained that such symbolic marriages are an ancestral tradition among mango cultivators, believed to invoke divine blessings for a healthy harvest

KARIMNAGAR: Symbolic marriage ceremonies for mango trees were held in the districts of Jagtial and Rajanna Sircilla in a blend of tradition and environmental reverence.

In Tunguru village of Beerapur mandal, orchard owner Ogula Ajay Kumar organised a ceremonial wedding between two mango trees in his 8-acre farm, marking the orchard’s first fruitful season after four consecutive years of no yield. The trees were adorned with new cloth and a symbolic mangalsutra made of gold, cumin seeds, and jaggery, while rituals were performed by priest Sattuparthi Madhu Kumaracharyulu from Birpur Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple.

“After years of disappointment, the trees bore fruit this season. We chose to express our gratitude through a traditional wedding ceremony, treating the trees as divine entities,” Ajay Kumar told Deccan Chronicle. The trees were symbolically represented as Parvati and Parameshwarudu.

Meanwhile, in East Wada of Rudrangi mandal, the Mudiraj community hosted a grand Kalyana Mahotsavam for mango trees, complete with Vedic chanting and rituals. Local dignitaries, including Market Committee Chairman and Congress leaders, attended the event.

Community elders explained that such symbolic marriages are an ancestral tradition among mango cultivators, believed to invoke divine blessings for a healthy harvest. “Mango trees are considered sacred, and mango leaves are tied at home entrances as symbols of auspiciousness. These rituals mirror our reverence for the elements and reflect the farmer’s enduring bond with nature,” they said.
