Telangana Truckers to Join May 20 Strike
Nationwide general strike called by several trade unions on May 20 to protest against the Centre’s labour policies

Hyderabad: The Telangana Lorry Owners’ Association has extended its support to the nationwide general strike called by several trade unions on May 20 to protest against the Centre’s labour policies. The strike is being organised in response to the Centre’s decision to consolidate 29 existing labour laws into four new labour codes passed in 2019 and 2020, which cover wages, social security, occupational safety, health and working conditions and industrial relations.
However, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has opposed the strike, stating that it is not appropriate at this point in time. In a press statement, BMS national executive member Ravi Shankar Alluri said the strike was “purely politically motivated and not for the benefit of the workers.” He added that BMS had welcomed two of the four labour codes and had made suggestions with regard to the codes covering industrial relations and occupational safety.
