Hyderabad: Telangana’s tourism heritage sites, adventures, spiritual and cuisines, crafts have received a major national spotlight in the ‘Divya Bharat report released by Niti Aayog, positioning the state as a compelling blend of heritage, nature, culture and modern experiences.

Tourism minister Jupally Krishna Rao termed the recognition a proud moment, stating that the report reflects the state’s growing appeal as a well-rounded destination for domestic and international travellers.

Iconic landmarks such as Charminar and Golconda Fort continue to anchor the state’s heritage tourism, while urban attractions like Hussainsagar are highlighted for offering leisure and adventure activities, including water sports.

Beyond cityscapes, the report underscores Telangana’s rich natural assets. Destinations like Kuntala Waterfall and Bogatha Waterfall are described as scenic retreats, while forest regions and wildlife zones add to eco-tourism opportunities. The inclusion of lakes such as Laknavaram Lake, known for its hanging bridge and island views, further strengthens the state’s nature tourism portfolio.

The report also highlights adventure tourism prospects, with sites like Bhongir Fort and rocky terrains around Hyderabad offering trekking, rock climbing and bouldering experiences. Air sports and boating activities around Hussainsagar and other water bodies are positioned as emerging attractions for younger travellers.

Spiritual tourism continues to be a strong pillar, with major pilgrim centres such as Yadadri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple and Bhadrachalam Temple drawing year-round footfall. The report also notes culturally significant sites like Basara and Kolanupaka, which add depth to Telangana’s religious tourism circuit.

A key highlight is the emphasis on cultural vibrancy. Festivals such as Sammakka Saralamma Jatara, one of Asia’s largest tribal gatherings, are recognised for showcasing indigenous traditions.

The report goes beyond destinations to spotlight Telangana’s cuisine and crafts. Signature dishes like Hyderabadi biryani and traditional foods such as sarva pindi and jonna rotte are featured as part of the state’s experiential tourism. Handicrafts, particularly Pochampally Ikat, along with Gadwal sarees, silver filigree and Nirmal artworks, are identified as key attractions for cultural and heritage tourists.

Importantly, the document also draws attention to lesser-known destinations across districts, encouraging decentralised tourism.
