Telangana: TGCSB Warns Of Fraud In Retro Photo Apps

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has warned that the growing craze for recreating 1980s‑style photographs could expose users to cyber fraud. The trend, popular among both youngsters and older generations, is being misused by fraudsters to lure victims.
TGCSB director Shikha Goel said fraudsters are circulating advertisements and messages offering free or unlimited access to applications that convert ordinary photos into retro images. Users are tricked into clicking suspicious links and downloading APK files from unverified sources.
Once installed, such malicious apps may seek excessive permissions, potentially accessing SMS messages, OTPs, contacts, banking details and other device data. The stolen information could be misused for financial fraud, unauthorised transactions and identity theft.
The bureau advised citizens not to click on unknown links or install APK files from untrusted sources. Applications should be downloaded only from official app stores, with permissions carefully reviewed. Users were also cautioned against sharing OTPs, PINs or banking credentials. Suspicious apps should be uninstalled immediately and permissions checked.
Keeping operating systems and applications updated with security patches was stressed. “An attractive photo‑editing offer can be a trap,” Goel said, urging citizens to verify apps before installing. Cybercrime complaints can be reported on 1930 or through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
