Telangana: Seminar On Women’s Role In Lawmaking

Reservations for women were given in legislative assemblies in countries around the world as early as 1920: Justice Radha Rani

HYDERABAD: Telangana Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (TGCDRC) president Justice Radha Rani on Sunday questioned whether the 33 per cent women's reservation in Parliament and legislative assemblies would be implemented by the 2029 elections.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Constitution Protection Forum, Justice Radha Rani expressed concern over low representation of women in Indian politics.

Reservations for women were given in legislative assemblies in countries around the world as early as 1920, she said, adding that in countries like Rwanda and Congo, more than 60 per cent of women are in legislative assemblies.

She said that it was a matter of concern that women's representation has not crossed 14 per cent even after so many decades of independence in our country.

While Prof. Madabhushi Sridhar spoke about the awareness of the Constitution, laws and politics, essential to secure the right to reservation.

Telangana High Court senior advocate G. Vidyasagar and forum members K. Umamaheswara Rao, S. V. Prasad, Kamesh Babu, Veeraiah, Nagalakshmi, Indira, D. G. Narasimha Rao and among others also participated.
