Hyderabad: The Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV) said that the government had signed an order to release `9.98 crore as payment of ex gratia for the families of 141 farmers who had died by suicide. The order sanctioning the amount was issued on January 9, it said.
The families will get `6 lakh each as per GO 194; `5 lakh for the family and `1 lakh to settle family debts.
The RSV said it had filed a PIL (101/2022) and a contempt case (2587/2024) in the Telangana High Court, seeking reinvestigation into the reasons for deaths of 141 farmers between 2014 and 2022. The court directed the commissioner for relief to disburse the sanctioned amount to collectors for disbursal to the families.
“The release is a victory for the families who had to endure a decade-long wait for getting relief,” B. Kondal Reddy of RSV said.
“Many farmers who died after 2018 did not receive compensation. We thank advocate Vasudha Nagaraj who stood by us in pursuing this case,” he said.
Farmer bodies had been airing worry that the BRS regime had not listed the names of farmers who died by suicide after it launched the Rythu Bima life insurance scheme on August 15, 2018.
Of the 7,000 farmers who died by suicide after 2014, the families of only 1,400 had been identified and given compensation of `6 lakh each under GO 194. Another 5,400 affected families still await payment.
The order allows a re-inquiry into these deaths by the government if it wishes to do so, suo motu, Kondal Reddy said. “We will continue the fight for getting compensation to the 282 farmers died by suicide after the Congress government came to power.”
He said that visits by the three-member government committee to inquire into each farmer suicide case have to be started forthwith.
