Telangana Records All-Time High Power Demand of 20,003 MW

In a historic milestone, Telangana recorded an all-time high power demand of 20,003 MW at 10.29 am on October 15

Hyderabad: With electricity requirements increasing significantly across Telangana, power utilities are taking necessary measures to efficiently manage supply in line with the record-high demand.

Growing electricity consumption in agriculture, domestic households, commercial establishments, IT and industrial sectors has pushed the state's power demand to unprecedented levels.

In a historic milestone, Telangana recorded an all-time high power demand of 20,003 MW at 10.29 am on October 15. The previous peak demand recorded during the financial year 2025–26 was 18,548 MW.

The latest record represents an increase of 1,455 MW over the previous peak. On the same day, the state's electricity consumption reached 334.54 million units (MU).

From October 1 to 15, the state recorded an average peak demand of 19,289 MW, while average daily electricity consumption stood at 321.34 MU.

Record Electricity Consumption in TGSPDCL Jurisdiction

The TGSPDCL recorded a peak demand of 12,532 MW on October 16, with daily electricity consumption reaching 228.14 MU. This is 5.80 MU higher than the previous year's peak daily consumption of 222.34 MU.

Earlier, the TGSPDCL recorded a peak demand of 12,532 MW at 12.16 pm on September 30. Compared with the peak demand of 11,318 MW recorded during the previous financial year, the current peak reflects a substantial increase in electricity requirements.

The TGSPDCL is continuously monitoring its power distribution network and taking necessary measures to prevent interruptions and ensure reliable electricity supply in line with the growing demand.

Rising Electricity Requirements in GHMC

In Hyderabad, the peak electricity demand within GHMC limits reached 4,220 MW at 6.19 pm on October 15. Daily electricity consumption had reached 88.22 MU on October 9.

Compared with the previous year's peak demand of 3,552 MW recorded during October, the city's electricity demand has increased considerably.

The rise in demand is attributed to growing domestic consumption, commercial activities, IT establishments and industrial requirements, along with increased use of cooling appliances due to high temperatures and humid conditions.

TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patil stated that the power supply system was being managed efficiently to meet the growing electricity requirements of the agricultural, domestic, commercial, IT and industrial sectors.

He observed that increasing dependence on borewells and greater use of agricultural pump sets, particularly amid declining groundwater levels, were adding further pressure on electricity demand.

He stated that measures were being taken to meet the growing requirements through power procurement and enhancement of generation capacity, among other initiatives.

The CMD appealed to consumers to use electricity judiciously and avoid wastage. In line with the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's directions, he also urged people to conserve water.

Emphasising the importance of water conservation amid declining groundwater levels, he advised consumers to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and adopt energy-efficient practices to help reduce pressure on electricity demand.

'Polam Bata' Programme to Support Farmers

Under the directions of TGSPDCL CMD, electricity department officials have been continuously monitoring agricultural power supply and remaining accessible to farmers in rural areas.

Over the past week, officials have been visiting villages every morning as part of the 'Polam Bata' programme to identify electricity-related problems faced by farmers at the field level and facilitate their prompt resolution.

Officials are inspecting electricity supply conditions, groundwater levels, borewell water availability, agricultural pump performance and crop conditions in rural areas.

Preventive measures are being taken to address potential interruptions and problems relating to agricultural motors, service wires and distribution transformers. Officials are coordinating with field staff to resolve issues promptly and ensure that farmers do not face difficulties in accessing electricity during critical irrigation periods.

Special attention is being given to complaints relating to agricultural power supply, and officials have been instructed to remain accessible to farmers at the field level.

As electricity is vital to the agricultural sector, the primary objective of the 'Polam Bata' programme is to reach farmers directly in their fields and understand their problems rather than limiting grievance redressal to offices.

Taking into account groundwater conditions, irrigation requirements and increasing agricultural electricity consumption, officials are extending the necessary support to farmers.

With the objective of ensuring quality power supply to the agricultural sector, field-level teams are identifying transformer-related issues, defects in electrical lines and low-voltage problems and taking steps to resolve them at the earliest.

The functioning of agricultural electrical equipment is also being monitored, and precautionary measures are being implemented to minimise supply interruptions. Officials are responding promptly to farmers' electricity-related grievances and coordinating with the concerned staff to ensure that agricultural activities are not disrupted.

The CMD appreciated the engineers and field-level staff for their continuous monitoring, coordination and dedication in efficiently managing the record-high electricity demand and maintaining reliable power supply.
