Telangana power utilities meet highest peak demand of 15752 MW

State govt. to ensure quality power supply to consumers

Hyderabad: Telangana's power utilities have set a record, meeting a new peak demand of 15,752 MW on Thursday, surpassing the previous high of 15,623 MW on March 8, 2024. In December 2024 and January 2025, peak demand grew by 13.49 per cent and 10.10 per cent respectively, compared to last year.

In a statement, TGTransco stated that distribution companies (discoms) were fully prepared to meet the projected demand, which is expected to exceed 17,000 MW during the upcoming summer. The northern and southern discoms plan to procure power through long-term contracts and power exchanges to ensure a steady supply as well as purchases from the power exchanges.

Stating that the power purchases had saved `1,000 crore in the last 13 months, the TG Transco said that the discoms were not only purchasing the power from the exchanges to meet the short-term deficit but also to reduce the power purchase costs through power purchase optimisation. It said that the rates for all power purchased from all the long-term agreements are decided by the Regulatory Commission. Hence, any shortage is met through purchases from the power exchanges, in tune with the regulations of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission.

The Central government has recognised Telangana's efficient use of the exchange market to optimise power purchase spending. The Telangana State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) was awarded as the best in the country for large states. Between December 2023 and January 2025, power purchase optimisation saved `982.66 crore. Had this amount not been saved, it would have led to an additional burden upon the consumers of the state.
