Telangana Plans Jowar Supply Through Ration Shops

The proposal, discussed at a recent Cabinet meeting, aims to clear accumulated stocks of these crops and minimise losses to the exchequer: Officials

ADILABAD: The state government is planning to distribute jowar and maize procured from farmers through fair price shops and supply them to government-run residential schools and hostels.

The proposal, discussed at a recent Cabinet meeting, aims to clear accumulated stocks of these crops and minimise losses to the exchequer. Officials said the move is also intended to support farmers by ensuring procurement and utilisation of their produce.

The government is considering including jowar in meals provided at schools and hostels, citing its nutritional value. The plan also seeks to supply the grain to ration card holders at subsidised rates through the Public Distribution System.

Officials said the initiative would reduce the role of intermediaries and make the produce available to consumers at lower prices compared to the open market.

The decision follows a build-up of jowar and maize stocks in government godowns, with limited response from private traders in open auctions. Prolonged storage has also led to deterioration of older stocks, contributing to losses.
