Telangana Launches Student Skill Profiling Under Project Nipun

The idea is to identify gaps and use this data to design targeted interventions in training, internships, and faculty development.

Hyderabad:The higher education department on Thursday issued an order to launch a state-wide student skill profiling programme under Project Nipun to map career readiness across government and private aided undergraduate colleges.

According to department officials, the initiative will measure students’ current capabilities in areas like communication, reasoning, digital skills, and workplace behaviour. The idea is to identify gaps and use this data to design targeted interventions in training, internships, and faculty development.

Every student will receive a “career readiness score” and colleges will be given a “heat map” of their students’ skill levels. This mapping is expected to help institutions develop action plans to improve overall student employability.

Four main components outlined include career skill profiling, career readiness training, institutional capacity building, and stronger links with industry and other government departments. The government said it has already begun pilot studies in select institutions, which will be used to prepare a comprehensive skill landscape report for the state.

Colleges will also be encouraged to set up peer mentoring groups, career clubs, and use project-based learning to build these skills gradually. Faculty will receive exposure and orientation sessions to help integrate employability-focused content into their regular teaching. Officials say this data-driven approach is intended to move beyond one-time assessments and instead create a feedback loop between student needs, institutional support, and career outcomes.
