Telangana Launches Major Renewable Energy Purchase Plan For Long-Term Power Security
Telangana plans to procure solar, wind and round-the-clock renewable power, along with battery storage, to meet rising electricity demand and ensure reliable, affordable energy.
The state government has launched a programme to buy renewable power to meet the state’s growing electricity needs. The programme will be carried out through Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGRedco) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGenco).
According to official sources, tender documents will be issued for 3,000 MW of solar power with 6,000 MWh of battery storage, 800 MW of wind power, 2,000 MW of round-the-clock renewable power, and 2,000 MWh of battery energy storage under the plan. The government says the move will help provide reliable, affordable and clean electricity.
Telangana’s peak power demand has reached about 19,892 MW. Officials expect demand to rise further because of industrial growth, urbanisation, data centres, electric vehicles, irrigation needs and large infrastructure projects.
The solar power and battery storage will be procured for 25 years. The batteries will store extra solar power generated during the day and supply it during evening and night hours, when demand is high.
The 800 MW wind power will also be bought for 25 years. Wind power is expected to support supply during evening and night hours and reduce dependence on a single source of energy.
The 2,000 MW round-the-clock renewable power will be purchased for 25 years. It will combine solar, wind and storage to provide firm electricity throughout the day.
