Telangana: Katedan FBOs Severely Violate Food Safety Norms

Hyderabad: The state commissioner of food safety on Wednesday announced that the licenses of manufacturing units of two food business operators (FBOs) in the Kattedan industrial area in South Hyderabad were suspended and the establishments have been directed to cease operations during the suspension period. The task force team conducted inspections at SKR Food Products and Umani Foods International in Kattedan. Both industries make ginger garlic paste and have been found severely violating the food safety protocols.

From SKR Food Products, the officials seized 1,000 kg of ginger garlic paste on suspicion of adulteration and substandard quality. They collected samples and sent them to a lab for detailed analysis. The officials found the medical fitness certificates for food handlers, pest control records and water analysis reports were lacking. The manufacturing unit was in a highly unhygienic condition and water stagnation was observed. They noticed loose plaster flakes shedding from the roof right above the grinding and packing area. The unit also did not have insect-proof screens.

From Umani Food International, the food safety officials seized 400 kg of packed ginger garlic paste. They also found 50 kg of Tartrazine, a synthetic food colour, suspected of being used in making ginger garlic paste. Other violations included a lack of name board and address details at the premises. The FBO initially obstructed the entry of food safety officials for inspection.

Additionally, water stagnation was observed near cleaning and grinding areas. Cobwebs were found on walls and ceiling. The unit was highly unhygienic with no tight-fitting screens preventing the entry of insects. Food handlers were not wearing hair caps, gloves and aprons. Pest control records, medical fitness certificates for food handlers and water analysis reports were also not available with the management of Umani Food International.

"Further action on criminal and other civil provisions will be taken based on the lab analysis reports," the Commissioner posted on X.
