Telangana Gurukul Schools to Teach Coding

After the pilot in one school in Moinabad drew encouraging results, the society chose to expand the project across the state.

Hyderabad: Gurukul schools will introduce coding lessons for students from Class VI to Intermediate starting from the 2025-26 academic year. The programme will run across all 238 schools managed by the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGSWREIS), which announced the decision on Monday.

After the pilot in one school in Moinabad drew encouraging results, the society chose to expand the project across the state. The Raspberry Pi Foundation, based in the United Kingdom, will support the rollout over a five-year period. Officials from TGSWREIS and the foundation have signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise the collaboration.

The foundation will assist with designing the curriculum, guiding teaching methods, and reviewing the progress of the programme. Students will learn computing as a regular subject, with two hours of classroom teaching each week followed by two hours of project-based work. Roughly 1.5 lakh students are expected to take part in the first year.

The syllabus is being developed to match international standards, using material that focuses on coding, artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital tools. Printed books will be provided to help students follow the lessons. There will be regular assessments, and certificates will be issued based on performance.

Those showing stronger interest and ability will be selected for more advanced learning. About 250 students each year will get the chance to work on practical projects. These will be displayed online so they can be reviewed by companies looking for young technical talent. Those chosen may be offered job placements.

Each school will also have five student mentors to guide small batches of learners. Altogether, more than 1,000 student mentors will be coaching their peers, and the wider training network is expected to reach nearly 90,000 learners.

To support the technical side of the project, TGSWREIS is upgrading the infrastructure in schools. Computer labs are being prepared, and classrooms will be fitted with digital equipment. Speaking about the project, Dr V.S. Alagu Varshini, secretary of TGSWREIS, said the goal was to help students understand the digital world and prepare them to step confidently into future opportunities.
