Telangana: Govt Urged To Recognize Tenant Farmers In State

HYDERABAD: The state government has once been urged to take action for recognising tenant farmers, who, according to a group of eminent citizens, were facing distress conditions. The group, led by Supreme Court former judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy (retd), in an open letter, thanked the government for setting up a Cabinet sub-committee to look into tenant farmers’ issues, adding that there “is a serious urgency of recognition of tenant cultivators.”
The group that wrote to the government includes Prof. G. Haragopal, Prof. Shanta Sinha, Justice Chandra Kumar (retd), Dr V. Rukmini Rao, former IAS officer Akunuri Murali, and Prof. D. Narasimha Reddy.
They said “if the recognition process starts now, then these farmers will be able to sell their crops at MSP to procurement agencies this season. Due to the El Nino effect, the cultivators are already facing a difficult time, and if they don’t get a good price for the crop, it may trigger more distress and suicides.”
They also said that Telangana has an existing legal instrument for recognition of cultivators in the form of the Land Licensed Cultivators Act, 2011. “As the law is in force, it is the duty of the government to implement it,” Justice Sudershan Reddy and the others said.
