Telangana Govt to Continue Polytechnic Students’ Lateral Entry to Second-Year Engineering

A separate clarification issued through the Telangana government’s fact-check account said “there is no change in the existing arrangements” concerning lateral entry, fees and scholarships.

Hyderabad:The Telangana government on Thursday assured polytechnic students that lateral entry into second-year engineering through TG ECET would continue and said there would be no change in existing fees or scholarships, as protests against GO 97 continued across Hyderabad and the state. Polytechnic students and staff, however, are proceeding with a “Chalo Hyderabad” programme on August 22.

Labour and SHAKTI minister G. Vivek Venkatswamy said polytechnics were being moved under the skill, human capital and knowledge training initiatives (SHAKTI) department to give students advanced skill training and improve employment opportunities. He said lecturers and other staff would continue as government employees, their service conditions would remain unchanged and POLYCET would continue. Fees would also remain the same, he said.

A separate clarification issued through the Telangana government’s fact-check account said “there is no change in the existing arrangements” concerning lateral entry, fees and scholarships. It also said the government was engaging with student unions and that their concerns would be clarified through official channels.

Students, however, continued demonstrations at Abdullapurmet near Ramoji Film City and Yousufguda on Thursday. The agitation centres on GO 97, which put polytechnic colleges under the ambit of Young India Skills University as part of the SHAKTI reorganisation. Students and staff have questioned what the change could mean for the separate academic status of diploma education and the future role of SBTET.
