Telangana Govt Schools See Big Leap in Literacy; English Reading up 7x Since 2022
It measured whether children could read sentences and perform addition and subtraction by the end of Class II.

Hyderabad: Telangana’s Class II students in government schools have shown gains in reading and basic maths, with the latest Foundational Literacy and Numeracy assessment for 2025-26 recording higher competency levels across Telugu, Urdu, English and Mathematics.
The assessment, conducted by SCERT between February 25 and 27, with support from Central Square Foundation, covered around 8,500 students from 1,750 government and local body schools across all 33 districts of the state. It measured whether children could read sentences and perform addition and subtraction by the end of Class II.
Data show Telugu sentence reading rose from 9 per cent in 2022-23 to 35 this year; English from four to 29 per cent, while Urdu sentence reading reached 40 per cent. In Mathematics, addition with carry-over improved from 18 per cent to 43, and subtraction with borrowing from 10 to 30 per cent.
The report explained: “35 in 100 students can read almost all sentences correctly. This is four times the number in 2022 and six per cent improvement in last year.” English reading saw the fastest rise, going from four to 29 per cent, a 7x growth since 2022.
SCERT said the findings showed improvement in core skills and would guide teacher training and district targets. It added that the state plans to reach 80 per cent competency in the next two to three years which means that most children would be able to read sentences or solve problems correctly.
