Hyderabad: Telangana Health department on Thursday issued a general health advisory to citizens of the State to safeguard during rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning of heavy rains for the next two days across Telangana which may lead to lower temperature and higher humidity, leading to seasonal illnesses especially vector and water-borne diseases.
In the advisory, Telangana Public Health and Family Welfare Director Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak listed out a few tips to stay healthy during the rains. To fight against mosquito menace and prevent malaria, dengue and chikungunya, the doors and windows were to be secured with mosquito nets and screens.
Beds and cribs were to be covered with mosquito nets and use mosquito repellents as precaution. Maintain domestic drains to prevent water stagnation and septic tanks should be covered with a mesh to prevent mosquito breeding.
The residents must observance “Friday- Dry Day” every week to get rid of stagnant water around the house and they must take necessary steps to prevent water borne infections- Acute Gastroenteritis, Jaundice and Typhoid.
The residents must drink filtered or boiled water or wash their hands especially before and after meals apart from avoid eating outside stale food. They should protect themselves against airborne infections - viral fevers and influenza apart from avoiding shaking hands, with someone who is sick, or when he or she is sick.
Nayak said the residents must use hand sanitizers often to avoid being infected and hand-kerchief while sneezing or coughing. “If any person develops flu-like symptoms - cough with fever, headache, sore throat and associated body pains, please visit the nearby government health facilities. In case of a health emergency, please call 108 ambulance services,” he advised.
As a part of precautionary measures, the State government has made elaborate arrangements by providing special beds, I.V fluids, and essential medicines at all the public health facilities. Medicines and ORS sachets are available with Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) and Anganwadi workers to meet any exigencies.
