Telangana Orders Parrot-Green Sarees Under Free Distribution Scheme

State assigns ₹450-crore order to TESCO for production of one crore sarees with revised colour and design

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to continue its free saree distribution scheme for women this year, introducing a new colour and design for the garments.

As part of the latest rollout, the state has chosen a parrot-green shade with red zari detailing, replacing the earlier blue sarees distributed in the previous phase. Officials said the change was made to introduce variety and updated designs in the scheme.

The order for producing one crore sarees has been placed with the TESCO at an estimated cost of ₹450 crore.

In the previous year, the government had distributed around 86 lakh sarees on November 19, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi. The current administration aims to complete production by October and distribute the sarees again on the same date this year.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has reportedly directed officials to ensure design variations each year instead of maintaining a single colour. Based on this, officials prepared multiple samples before finalising the parrot-green design.

The scheme will be implemented across both rural and urban areas in a single phase this year, unlike the staggered distribution in the past.

Officials have also planned to involve weavers from several districts, including Sircilla, Karimnagar, Jagtial, Peddapalli, Mancherial, Warangal, and Hanumakonda, as part of the production process.
