NIZAMABAD: Government advisor P. Sudarshan Reddy said the state government was supplying fine rice through ration shops to ensure that economically weaker families had access to nutritious food.
Speaking at a digital smart ration card distribution programme at Bhooma Reddy Convention Hall in Nizamabad on Saturday, Sudarshan Reddy said the initiative was aimed at strengthening food security and ensuring transparency in the Public Distribution System.
He alleged that under the previous government, the coarse rice supplied through the Public Distribution System was often not fit for consumption, resulting in nearly 70 per cent of beneficiaries selling it, while subsidised rice was diverted to the black market. The supply of fine rice had helped strengthen food security among poor families, he said.
Sudarshan Reddy said digital smart ration cards would bring greater transparency and accountability to the ration distribution system. He directed officials to ensure that not a single grain of subsidised rice meant for the poor was diverted.
He said the smart cards would also make access to ration supplies easier, enabling beneficiaries to obtain their entitlements from ration shops using the card.
Nizamabad rural MLA Dr R. Bhoopathi Reddy, urban MLA Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta, Armoor MLA Paidi Rakesh Reddy, Mayor K. Uma Rani, state minority commission chairman Tariq Ansari, state Urdu Academy chairman Taher Bin Hamdan, in-charge collector Bhavesh Mishra, additional collector V. Bhujanga Rao, Armoor sub-collector Abhigyan Malviya, trainee collector Suresh, state agriculture commission member Gadugu Gangadhar and other elected representatives and officials were present.
