Hyderabad: Telangana is home to some of India's best-known universities and educational institutions, but is falling behind several other states in attracting international students for higher education, according to data from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) of 2023-24.

The figures show that Telangana accounts for only a small share of foreign students across almost every major level of higher education.

At the undergraduate level, Telangana ranked 12th in the country, housing only 989 international students of the national total of 42,779 students, or 2.31 per cent. Karnataka topped the UG list with 6,658 students.

The trend continued at the postgraduate level. Telangana ranked 10th with only 240 international students, making up 2.45 per cent of the national total of 9,793. In this category, Maharashtra led the country with 2,531 students.

The picture was even weaker in diploma courses according to the report. Telangana stood 11th with just 23 international students, accounting for only 1.38 per cent of the national total of 1,660. Gujarat led with 409 students.

Similar performances were observed in doctoral education, where Telangana ranked ninth in the country by attracting 87 international PhD scholars, 3.96 per cent of the country's total of 2,195. Leading the pack was Uttar Pradesh with 480 scholars.

AISHE data also showed that Telangana did not enrol any international students in M. Phil or postgraduate diploma programmes during the survey period.
