Telangana Ends August With 38% Rainfall Deficit
Weak August rains deepen monsoon shortfall, with state receiving 17% less rain since June
Hyderabad: Telangana closed August with 134.5 mm of rain against a normal 215.8 mm, leaving the state with a 38 per cent deficit, according to the Telangana Development & Planning Society (TGDPS).
The month was uneven from the start. The deficit widened to 49 per cent by August 3 before a brief spell of rain pushed the state to a 13 per cent surplus on August 4. The improvement did not last, and the state slipped back into deficit the next day. By August 22, the shortfall was 39 per cent, ending the month at 38 per cent.
June had recorded a 12 per cent deficit, while July was nearly normal with just a 1 per cent shortfall. August’s weak performance pulled down the season’s overall rainfall. From June 1 to August 31, the state received 473.8 mm against a normal 573.5 mm, leaving cumulative monsoon rainfall 17 per cent below normal. Despite this, the overall status remained in the “normal” category.
District-wise figures showed uneven distribution. Hyderabad was 22 per cent deficient, Mahbubnagar 21 per cent, Narayanpet and Nagarkurnool 28 per cent each, and Adilabad 29 per cent. Hanamkonda recorded the highest cumulative deficit at 45 per cent, followed by Warangal at 44 per cent and Jangaon at 42 per cent.
Hyderabad received 361.6 mm against a normal 466 mm between June 1 and August 31, spread over 34 rainy days.
August was marked by short, uneven spells of rain separated by longer dry periods. While July had brought the monsoon closer to normal, August’s deficit left Telangana entering September with a sizable cumulative gap, highlighting the uneven distribution of rainfall across districts.
