Communists had spearheaded struggles for irrigation and water resources: CPM politburo member B.V. Raghavulu
WARANGAL: Communists have consistently led struggles over land and farmers’ issues, and Sarampalli Mallareddy was among those at the forefront of such movements, CPM politburo member B.V. Raghavulu said.
Speaking at a condolence meeting for Mallareddy at Bhimaram in Warangal city on Wednesday, Raghavulu said Communists had spearheaded struggles for irrigation and water resources. The meeting was presided over by CPM district secretary Prabhakar Reddy.
Recalling P. Sundarayya’s efforts in 1956 to make all regions fertile, Raghavulu said several projects and canals had come up following communist struggles.
He said Mallareddy had served as sarpanch of his village and worked to provide basic facilities. He maintained that regions without Communist movements had remained backward and credited such struggles with contributing to the development of southern states.
Raghavulu said Mallareddy had worked for the party until his final days. Recalling that Mallareddy often said staying among people helped one remain healthy, he said Mallareddy had chosen to become a Communist despite having served as a police patel because he believed the position was not enough to serve people.
He said the best tribute to Mallareddy would be to continue fighting for problems faced by ordinary people.
CPM state secretary John Wesley said Mallareddy had remained steadfast despite cases, killings and detentions and had made his family part of the party. He regularly studied issues and shared information with people’s organisations, besides offering suggestions on matters to be raised in the Assembly, Wesley said.
Wesley alleged that ruling classes were undermining the Constitution and said struggles were the only way to resolve people’s problems, a path Mallareddy had followed throughout his life.
MLAs Naini Rajender Reddy and Revoori Prakash Reddy, MLC Basavaraju Saraiah, former MP Boinapally Vinod Kumar and former mayor T. Rajeshwara Rao said Mallareddy had devoted himself to public causes until his death.
