Telangana: Colonies Reel Under Monsoon Flooding, Poor Drainage To Blame

HYDERABAD: From Bank Colony and Green Park Colony in Saroornagar, Singareni Colony in Saidabad to Mithilanagar in Jillelaguda, residents continue to bear the brunt of flooding and water stagnation every monsoon season.
Moderate to heavy rain lashed several areas of the city on Monday night, with rainwater entering homes, inundating apartment cellars and waterlogging roads, disrupting normal life in these colonies on Tuesday. Residents attributed the recurring problem to poor sewerage systems, raised road levels and clogged manholes.
Bank Colony residents complained that despite rainwater entering their houses every monsoon, the issue has remained unresolved for decades. Local resident M. Sujatha said the raised road level, higher than their houses, causes water to stagnate and flow inside whenever it rains.
“This has been the situation for the past 45 years. No official has ever come to ask about our problems. We even approached HYDRAA, but there has been no response. We spent lakhs on renovation earlier and now we cannot afford to do it again,” she said. Residents urged authorities to desilt manholes and ensure free flow of rainwater.
Singareni Colony residents said flooding continues even after a new box drain was constructed. Prashanthi, a resident, said dirty rainwater and mud entered her house during the latest spell. “After repeated complaints mud is being cleared from the drain. However, the mud is being left on the roadside, which again washes back onto the road during the next rain. We also have to clean our water sump whenever drain water enters our houses,” she said.
In Green Park Colony, Madhavi S. was seen cleaning her house with disinfectant after rainwater and mud entered her home. She said stagnant water leads to mosquitoes, forcing her family to clean the house regularly after every spell of rain. Residents blamed the lack of a proper drainage system, saying rainwater flowing from upper areas such as Balapur enters the colony. Giri, a resident, said uneven road levels have worsened the problem, with some roads being much higher than others.
In Mithilanagar, Jillelguda, waterlogging submerged internal lanes. Local resident Narasimha Reddy said people cannot step out without using a vehicle, as even after the rain stops, water remains on the roads.
