Hyderabad:Employees in commercial establishments may now work up to 10 hours a day, provided their total does not exceed 48 hours a week, according to an order issued by principal secretary (labour) M. Dana Kishore and released by the labour commissioner on Saturday.

The notification grants commercial establishments, excluding shops, as defined in Section 2(5) of the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988, exemption from Sections 16 and 17 of the Act, subject to strict conditions: No employee may work more than 10 hours in a day.

Total working hours must not exceed 48 per week; hours beyond this attract overtime pay. Anyone working more than six hours a day must receive a rest interval of at least 30 minutes. Including the rest break, an employee’s work period must not stretch beyond 12 hours in any single day. Overtime, paid at the prescribed rate, may not exceed 144 hours in any quarter.

The labour department warned that any violation of these provisions could lead to immediate revocation of the exemption without prior notice.
