Hyderabad:Telangana BJP president N. Ramchander Rao will embark on a two-day visit to Nalgonda and Suryapet districts on July 14 and 15, marking his maiden tour of key south Telangana regions. The visit reflects a strategic effort to consolidate the party’s presence in an area traditionally dominated by the Congress and the BRS, and to energise the party ahead of the upcoming local body elections.
South Telangana remains a challenging terrain for the BJP, which has historically been stronger in North Telangana and Hyderabad. While the party doubled its Lok Sabha seats in Telangana to eight in the 2024 general elections, seven of those victories came from North Telangana. The 2023 Assembly elections further underscored the Congress’s dominance in the south, making it imperative for the BJP to build a stronger organisational base here to expand its statewide footprint.
Telangana’s significance as a gateway to southern India has made it a focal point of the BJP’s ‘Mission South’ agenda, with the national leadership emphasising growth beyond traditional strongholds.
Ramchander Rao, a seasoned advocate and former MLC with deep roots in Telangana politics, said the choice of Nalgonda and Suryapet for his first visit was deliberate.
He highlighted the party’s growing momentum in these districts, pointing to earlier successes such as winning the Municipal Chairman post in Nalgonda town. The visit also aims to prepare the party cadre for the local body polls, which are seen as crucial for strengthening grassroots support.
During his tour, Ramchander Rao will engage with a broad spectrum of society, including youth groups in Munugode and Choutuppal, SC and ST representatives in Chityal, and women’s organisations in Narketpally. He will also meet professionals such as lawyers and doctors in Nalgonda to widen the party’s outreach.
A significant part of the visit includes spending a night in his native village, Nallabandugudem in Kodad constituency, where he will interact with community members. On the second day, he will continue engagements in Kodad and Choutuppal and participate in a workshop on local governance in Aushapur, said Gujjula Premender Reddy, general secretary of the Telangana BJP.
This visit is designed not only to boost morale among party workers but also to sharpen the BJP’s focus on local governance — a critical factor for success in the imminent local body elections. Strengthening the party’s base in South Telangana is essential for the BJP’s ambition to transition from a regional player concentrated in the north and Hyderabad to a formidable statewide force capable of challenging established rivals in future Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
