Telangana: Biogas Plant Earns OU Professor Recognition

The recognition was conferred on October 9 at the India International Centre in New Delhi: Reports

HYDERABAD: Osmania University (OU) Zoology professor C. Srinivasulu has been recognised as a changemaker at Saahas@25 for establishing a biogas plant on campus that has been operating continuously for more than 800 days, converting organic waste into energy and manure.

The recognition was conferred on October 9 at the India International Centre in New Delhi, as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Saahas, an organisation working in solid waste management and resource recovery.

The two-tonne-per-day plant was set up in a short period and processes green organic waste generated on the university campus. The biogas produced is used in two university kitchens, while the nutrient-rich slurry is applied in the campus landscape gardens.

A statement said the system created a cycle in which organic waste was converted into energy and manure, reducing the amount of waste that needed disposal and making better use of campus resources.

Congratulating Srinivasulu, OU Vice Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram said the initiative demonstrated how environmental sustainability could be put into practice. He added that using the gas in kitchens and the slurry in gardens showed how organic waste could be turned into useful resources, and said the initiative could serve as a model for other educational institutions.

Saahas, founded in 2001 by Wilma Rodrigues, works to promote waste recovery, reuse and resource circularity. Its 25th anniversary programme recognised individuals and initiatives contributing to environmental sustainability.
