Hyderabad: Telangana has recorded a historic surge in rabi crop cultivation during the 2024-25 season, with the total sown area reaching an all-time high of 79.96 lakh acres. This marks a significant increase from last year’s 67.70 lakh acres, according to the final report for rabi season released by the state agriculture department.
The normal rabi sown area stands at 63.54 lakh acres, but this year, as of April 30, the actual sown area was 126 per cent of the normal area.
Paddy continued to dominate rabi cultivation, accounting for the lion’s share of the acreage. This year, paddy was sown in a record 59.84 lakh acres, up from 52.03 lakh acres last year, representing 127 per cent of the normal figure. The report stated that the normal sown area for paddy during rabi is 47.27 lakh acres, while the expected area for April 30, 2025, was 46.19 lakh acres.
Agricultural officials attributed the increase in overall rabi acreage to favourable weather conditions, improved irrigation infrastructure and higher market demand for certain crops like paddy and maize. The rise in maize cultivation, in particular, is being seen as a positive trend given its growing use in the poultry and starch industries.
The department has also noted the strategic shift among farmers, especially those in irrigated regions, toward high-yield and market-driven crops. However, they acknowledged concerns over the drop in pulses like bengal gram and have indicated that support schemes and awareness programmes may be needed to encourage balanced crop diversification.
With the rabi season wrapping up, the agriculture department is closely monitoring yield forecasts and market trends as the state prepares for the upcoming kharif season in June
