Teachers' Body Urges Centre To Find Alternative To TET

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's reported directive to close government primary schools with low student enrolment: Reports

NALGONDA: Telangana State United Teachers’ Federation (TGUTF) state president Chava Ravi on Sunday urged the Centre to devise alternative measures to provide relief to 25 lakh teachers across the country who have not qualified in the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET).

Speaking at a two-day UTF meeting of Nalgonda district that began at Kattangur on November 1, he said the Supreme Court, in its verdict, had mandated that government teachers appointed after August 23, 2010, must qualify in TET

He said nearly 25 lakh government teachers across the country had not cleared the test and urged the Centre to come up with a mechanism to provide them relief.
He criticised Telangana GO No. 25, issued for rationalisation of teacher posts and staff in government, Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad schools based on student enrolment, saying it had adversely affected primary education in the State

He also strongly opposed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy's reported directive to close government primary schools with low student enrolment.
Former Teachers' MLC Alugubelli Narsi Reddy said teachers alone should not be held responsible for the declining enrolment in government schools. He called for coordinated efforts by teachers, officials and elected representatives to improve enrolment in the 12,000 government schools that have fewer than six students

He also pointed out that the state government was not establishing new schools in rapidly expanding urban areas. Closing government schools on the grounds of low enrolment, he cautioned, would deprive rural communities of access to education.
