Tanker With Septic Waste Seized Near Osmansagar; WaterSafe: Water Board

Officials warned that dumping sewage into a protected drinking water source poses a serious threat to public health

Hyderabad: A private septic tanker was intercepted while attempting to illegally discharge sewage into the Osmansagar in Gandipet. The vehicle is seized and Moinabad police registered a criminal case against both the driver and the owners.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) on Thursday clarified that there is no cause for public concern following reports on social media about septic waste being dumped into the Osmansagar (Gandipet) reservoir, a major drinking water source for the city.

According to officials, a septic tanker bearing registration number TG11 T1833 was caught on December 18 around 8 am near FTL Point No 428 at Himayatnagar village, while attempting to illegally discharge sewage into the protected reservoir. Patrol staff immediately alerted senior officials, who seized the vehicle.

During inquiry, the tanker driver Ramavath Shiva Naik admitted that he acted on the instructions of the vehicle owner Niranjan, a resident of Himayatnagar.

The Water Board identified multiple violations, including unauthorised use of the HMWSSB logo on the tanker to mislead officials and the public and operation of an unregistered vehicle. Officials warned that dumping sewage into a protected drinking water source poses a serious threat to public health.
