Tallest Animal Marks Longest Day At Nehru Zoo
Awareness programmes and enrichment activities marked the occasion as visitors gathered to celebrate the world's tallest animal at Hyderabad's zoo.

HYDERABAD: Celebrating the world’s longest day on Sunday with the world’s tallest animal, Nehru Zoological Park observed World Giraffe Day on Sunday with enrichment activities and awareness programmes centred on its lone giraffe, Bunny. Zoo authorities served a specially prepared five‑kilogram cake of fruits, vegetables, green leaves, nuts and beans to the 10‑year‑old male giraffe. The event drew visitors, particularly children, who gathered to watch the unique celebration.
Two keeper talk sessions were held to educate visitors about giraffes. Assistant animal keeper Buchanna and zoo education officer Deepak Tharun explained the animal’s habitat, feeding habits, lifespan and behaviour. They noted that giraffes are native to Africa, herbivorous, live in groups and display different skin patterns depending on their geographical habitat.
Deputy curator J. Muralidhar said World Giraffe Day is observed globally on June 21 as it coincides with the longest day of the year, while the giraffe is recognised as the tallest animal. Curator J. Vasantha added that the zoo regularly conducts wildlife awareness programmes and is working to bring a female giraffe through an exchange programme.
