Talk Of DBT For Women Keeps Post Offices Busy
Interaction with the women at GPO, Abids revealed that they have come to know through word of mouth, and social media news about the announcement of major central and state schemes of cash transfer.

HYDERABAD: Hundreds of women making a beeline at the General Post Offices in the city to open saving bank accounts in Indian Post Payment Bank (IPPB) as it facilitates receiving benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, following a word of mouth publicity that the central and state governments are going to announce major direct benefit transfer schemes.
The trend has suddenly picked up after the presentation of Telangana State budget on March 19 this year. Hundreds of women turn up every day and stand in queues at the GPOs for long hours to open the IPPB savings account, similar to a bank account.
Interaction with the women at GPO, Abids revealed that they have come to know through word of mouth, and social media news about the announcement of major central and state schemes of cash transfer.
Fatima Bee, who came to open an IPPB account at the General Post Office at Abids, said that she and her extended family members have opened 12 savings accounts by depositing `300 each to get benefit under a central scheme of direct cash transfer for women.
“Modi saab aur Revanth saab do hazaar rupaya har khwatin to dene wale hai. Is liye hum account shuru karne aaye hai (Modi and Revanth Reddy are going to transfer `2,000 to each woman. That’s why, I am opening this account),” she said, adding that having an IPPB account would also consolidate and complement various state and central level initiatives.
The state budget also emphasizes expanding cash transfer schemes, particularly targeting women and lower-income households, aligning with broader trends where Telangana is among states implementing unconditional cash transfers.
Telangana continues to leverage the central government’s DBT platform to transfer subsidies and welfare payments directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, enhancing transparency and reducing leakages. Telangana’s DBT portal shows active implementation of over 130 schemes with transactions worth thousands of crores.
Y. Prasad, chief postmaster at GPO, Abids, said they have been opening an average of 400 IPPB savings accounts per day from March 23 onwards this year and the customers have been firmly requesting for an Aadhaar-linked account instead of general saving account. They may be opening the savings account to get benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme as many of them have been asking for the account which allows DBT benefits.
A similar trend of opening accounts started in neighboring Karnataka too a few days ago.
