HYDERABAD: The last rites of CPI national leader and former MP Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy will be performed with state honours on Sunday, after which the body will be donated to medical research at the Gandhi Medical College.

The mortal remains of Sudhakar Reddy, who passed away on Friday night, will be placed at Makhdoom Bhavan, Himayatnagar, from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday to enable party cadres, leaders and the public to pay their respects.

Later, with state honours, the body will be taken in a procession from the Makhdoom Bhavan to the Gandhi Medical College, where it will be donated for medical research in accordance with his wish. His eyes will also be donated to Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital.

CPI leaders said that since the veteran leader had chosen to donate his body, the state honours would be observed during the last journey. CPI state secretary and MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for directing officials to accord state honours to the departed leader.

Sudhakar Reddy, who was 83, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad and passed away late Friday night following a cardiac arrest. A towering figure in Indian politics, he served as general secretary of the CPI and was elected twice to the Lok Sabha.

He is survived by his wife B.V. Vijayalakshmi, a senior leader of the AITUC, and two sons, Nikhil Reddy and Kapil Reddy. His elder son Nikhil Reddy is expected to arrive from the United States on Sunday morning.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday directed Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao to oversee all arrangements for the last rites with state honours.
