Superstitions Enabling Fake Babas And Swamis To Thrive In Karimnagar Region

A baba convinced a family that gold bars weighing a quintal are buried near their house

Karimnagar: Fake babas and swamis are thriving in the erstwhile Karimnagar district due to superstitious people approaching them or vice versa to solve their problems or take revenge through black magic, special prayers, mantras, and Shudra pujas.

While some con artists pretend to know about hidden treasures or Lanke Bindelu that can make people rich, other so-called babas and swamis roam villages and target people with health issues, problems or debts. They promise to resolve their sufferings through poojas only to loot their money.
In a recent incident that took place in Kothapalli mandal, a baba convinced a family that gold bars weighing a quintal are buried near their house. He would perform special pujas which will not only make them wealthy but also healthy. Convincing members of the family, he started performing poojas while collecting money in instalments. The baba extorted over ₹15 lakh before vanishing from the place.
After the family lodged a complaint, police investigated the case and arrested five persons. Police revealed that the same group had previously defrauded a woman from Jangaon district of ₹10 lakh through similar kinds of pujas.
Likewise, Baba Bapu Swami, popular as Lemon Baba, from Vemulawada claimed to cure financial, personal, mental and health problems. Many innocent women trusted him and smelt the lemon he gave laced with sedatives. After the woman falls unconscious, he would sexually assault her and record the act to blackmail her. Many victims got cheated until some lodged a complaint. Vemulawada police have arrested Lemon Baba.
In Kakarlapalli village near Manthani mandal of Peddapalli district, items like coconuts, onions, lemons, garlic, eggs, turmeric and kumkum started appearing on the road leading to Dhanthanapalli village. Pedestrians and people on two-wheelers started getting scared, believing someone is performing black magic. Some even stopped using the road.
A very strange incident took place a few days ago in Yellareddypet mandal of Rajanna Sircilla district. A couple Ashritha and Haricharan of Venkatapur village had been living happily with no marital issues. When Ashirtha’s family ran into financial troubles, her family members hoped Ashirtha’s divorce would allow them to get back dowry money and pay off debts.
When Ashritha refused to take a divorce, family members sought help from a black magic practitioner who started negotiating with the couple. When the couple’s conversations with the man started going viral on social media as part of an extortion plan, the couple became worried and filed a complaint. Police arrested five persons in the case.
Karimnagar Rural circle inspector K. Niranjan Reddy said legal action will be taken against those who cheat people promising to find hidden treasures or solve problems.
