Substation Under Flyover to Boost Musheerabad Power Supply
A five-member committee examined construction, safety, and maintenance aspects and recommended use of technically suitable spaces beneath flyovers and steel bridges.

Hyderabad:TGSPDCL has initiated plans to set up an indoor 33/11 kV substation beneath the steel flyover at Musheerabad to address land constraints and improve power supply in Greater Hyderabad.
Chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil on Monday inspected the proposed site between pillars 63 and 64 near the Musheerabad bus depot, along with director (Projects & IT) V. Shivaji and senior engineers. Officials said the facility will house two 8 MVA transformers and indoor switchgear, with provision for eight 11 kV feeders, of which four will be commissioned initially.
The project is part of a broader effort by TGSPDCL, guided by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, to modernise distribution infrastructure in space-constrained urban areas. Officials said the proposed substation will ease load on five existing 33/11 kV substations and improve supply reliability in Jawaharnagar, Vidyanagar, Boudhnagar, LN Nagar, the City Central Library area and nearby localities. Plans include bifurcation and linking of selected feeders to the new unit.
The proposal includes dual connectivity for supply security, with a primary feed from the 132/33 kV Fever Hospital EHT substation through about 1.5 km of underground cable, and an alternate feed from the Chilakalguda–Narayanguda system via the Industrial Area substation to ensure continuity in case of disruption.
The Musheerabad unit is planned as an unmanned, remotely monitored facility with RTU integration, indoor switchgear, XLPE underground cabling, ring main units and protection systems. TGSPDCL has directed that it be developed as a model indoor substation with emphasis on safety, operational ease and future load requirements.
Patil directed that comprehensive technical assessments be conducted and safety norms on electrical isolation, earthing, insulation and protection be strictly followed. Officials said the approach could reduce land acquisition costs of ₹8-10 crore for conventional outdoor substations, while the indoor facility is estimated to cost ₹10-12 crore.
Senior officials, including Chief Engineer (Metro Zone) Karunakar Babu and superintending engineer Ramesh, were present during the inspection. TGSPDCL said similar projects would be considered in other areas if the Musheerabad model proves viable.
