Students Urged to Excel in Sports and Studies

Vijayawada: SRM University-AP honoured Paris Paralympian and Arjuna Awardee Deepthi Jeevanji, a commerce student at the Paari School of Business, for her bronze medal in the 400m T20 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Deepthi is the first intellectually impaired Indian athlete to win a Paralympic medal.
The university presented her with award cheques totalling Rs 40 lakh for her achievements. During the event, Deepthi expressed gratitude to the university for its support, encouraging students to pursue both academics and sports. She also unveiled the brochure for UDGAM 2025, a national-level sports fest expected to host over 3,200 participants.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Manoj K Arora highlighted the importance of sports in education, pledging ongoing support for talented students. Registrar Dr R Premkumar shared the university’s pride in Deepthi’s accomplishments, noting that Rs 70 lakh has been allocated to promote high-performing students in sports.
Five held in honey trap case
Visakhapatnam: Bheemili crime police arrested a five-member gang, including a woman, for extorting money from Munju Rama Rao of Srikakulam district. Though the incident occurred on January 19, the victim lodged a complaint on January 22.
Bheemili SI Surya Prakash Rao revealed that the victim received a call from a woman on January 18, which he ignored. However, on January 19, she called again, asking him to meet her at Sangivalasa in Bheemili. Upon reaching the spot, four men abducted him, assaulted him, and extorted Rs 48,000, along with Rs 7,000 via UPI from his phone.
The police identified the accused as B Chandrasekhar, D Laxman, M Venkat, P Suresh, and Kuppili Asharani. They were arrested, produced in court on Friday, and sent to 14-day judicial remand.
Police trace missing girls in hours
Vijayawada: Ajit Singh Nagar police resolved two missing girl cases within hours. In the first case, a 16-year-old girl and two friends from New Rajarajeswaripet went missing after visiting PVP Mall. Acting swiftly, police formed three special teams and used CCTV footage to track the girls to Tenali in Guntur district. The girls were safely rescued, and two boys they met on Instagram were detained for questioning.
In the second case, a 9-year-old girl went missing after being scolded by her father. Police found her at a family friend's apartment in the same locality. Both cases were resolved under the leadership of Commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, with efforts coordinated by DCP G. Ramakrishna and ACP Sravanthi Roy.
200 kgs of ganja seized in AKP
Visakhapatnam: In a major haul, the Anakapalli nabbed three persons and seized around 200 kgs of ganja on Friday. The police said they were checking vehicles between Sadhu Pakalu and Nellimetta of Narsipatnam mandal in Anakapalle district when a red car and a motorcycle came to the check post. The drivers tried to flee leaving the car behind.
Upon checking the car, the police found 205 kgs of ganja wrapped in eight bags. They were identified as TA Ajit and Suresh Kumar of Kerala and Marri Sathibabu of Pedabayalu mandal of ASR district.The police are looking for two more persons.
