State Starts Taking Steps for Declaring Drought

Indicating that Telangana farmers have also started suffering crop losses due to the El Nino hit monsoon, the minister said that crop losses should be determined through field-level inspection wherever necessary.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government appears to have made up its mind in principle on declaring a drought in the state following a poor monsoon season that left around a third of the 621 mandals with serious rainfall deficits.

On Thursday, agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao directed his department officials to coordinate with the revenue department on drought conditions in the state, and provide information required to declare drought affected mandals.

Indicating that Telangana farmers have also started suffering crop losses due to the El Nino hit monsoon, the minister said that crop losses should be determined through field-level inspection wherever necessary.

Nageswara Rao, who met with senior officials from his department, said officials should also focus on procuring 100 per cent of crops for which the Centre has announced a minimum support price.

He, however, said that the Centre's responsibility does not end with MSP announcements; ensuring that the MSP reaches every farmer is also the Central government’s responsibility.
