Southwest Monsoon Enters Telangana

Khammam registered the highest rainfall on Monday with 17.7 mm, followed by Suryapet with 16.2 mm and Rangareddy with 11.5 mm.

Hyderabad: The Southwest Monsoon entered Telangana on Monday, bringing the season’s first organised spell of rainfall and relief from the intense heat that gripped the state through May and early June.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the monsoon advanced into parts of Telangana, with conditions favourable for further progress across the state over the next two to three days. Senior consultant weather scientist at the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Y V Rama Rao, said the monsoon has covered Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet and Wanaparthy districts in the southwest corner of the state. “It will take another two to three days for the monsoon to cover the entire state. The present surge is expected to continue up to June 15, after which rainfall activity may reduce slightly,” he said.

Heavy rainfall was reported at isolated places in Suryapet and Rangareddy districts in the past 24 hours. Mattampally in Suryapet recorded 8 cm and Maheshwaram in Rangareddy 7 cm. Khammam registered the highest rainfall on Monday with 17.7 mm, followed by Suryapet with 16.2 mm and Rangareddy with 11.5 mm. Statewide rainfall since June 1 stands at 16.6 mm against a normal of 22.9 mm, leaving a 28 per cent deficit.

Even as the monsoon arrived, temperatures remained high in northern Telangana. Rebbena in Kumuram Bheem district recorded 42.8°C, Mancherial 42.7°C and Peddapalli 42.5°C. Hyderabad’s highest was 38.8°C at Charminar, with the city’s average maximum at 36.9°C.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers across Telangana from June 9 to 15, with yellow warnings for heavy rain in several districts over the next three days, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph. For Hyderabad, a generally cloudy sky with rain or thundershowers, particularly in the evenings and nights, has been forecast.

Meanwhile, Scientist F S Stella took charge as Head of the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad on June 8, replacing K Nagaratna after being transferred from Amaravati.
