Southern Discom Action Plan To Tackle El Niño; Ensures Uninterrupted Power Supply

Patil said discom was upgrading decades-old sub-stations with a 33/11 kv sub-station in Midjil of Mahbubnagar as the model.

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL, southern discom) said it had launched a comprehensive action plan to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers amid El Nino–related challenges.

Anticipating increased power demand, discom chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil said that they had taken measures to improve coordination across the government, energy department, power generation companies and Transco to prevent power supply disruptions.

Patil said discom was upgrading decades-old sub-stations with a 33/11 kv sub-station in Midjil of Mahbubnagar as the model. He said remotely monitored operation, digital control systems and automation will be introduced in phases to strengthen the distribution network and improve operational responsiveness.

“Authorities will install battery energy storage systems at substations, expand solar generation capacity and enhance storage capabilities so daytime solar output can be stored and used during peak demand. New substations, additional power transformers, feeder strengthening and voltage-improvement works are being expedited statewide to meet rising electricity consumption across sectors including the 30 lakh agricultural power connections,” Patil said.

Daily reviews of hydel generation, thermal plant performance, coal stocks and power purchases were underway, Patil said, adding that the distribution system will increasingly adopt digital mapping of feeders, DTRs real-time monitoring, fault-location systems and AI-based load forecasting and outage analysis. Customer grievance redressal will be strengthened through digital services to enable faster resolution of complaints, Patil said.
