Hyderabad: Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU) has received the Best University Award for its exemplary support in spreading awareness about the Free and Open-Source Software for Education (FOSSEE-GIS) project, IIT Bombay’s geospatial initiatives and its active participation in related activities.
A press release from the university stated that Dr D. Raji Reddy, Vice Chancellor of the university, received the award during the Open-Source GIS Day Celebrations and National Geospatial Awards 2025, held at IIT Bombay on Thursday. The award was presented by Kiran Kumar, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), who was the chief guest at the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raji Reddy, a climatologist, highlighted the importance of Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping in the emerging field of horticulture and its role in addressing challenges in the horticulture sector in Telangana. He said SKLTHU would take the lead in GIS applications in horticulture and has already begun mapping orchards across the state. He emphasised that it is time for Telangana farmers to reap the benefits of GIS technology.
The university also announced plans to conduct a GIS Hackathon in the coming days.
