Hyderabad: A group of men allegedly attacked a sub-inspector and other police personnel on Bonalu bandobast duty at Bharat Nagar in Ramanthapur under Uppal police station limits late Sunday night.
According to police, the incident took place around 9.30 pm during a Palaram Bandi procession organised by one Krishna Diamond. As part of the bandobast, SI Madhu and his team stopped a car being driven rashly towards the crowd. The occupants fled, but a drunken man later approached the officers, claiming ownership of the vehicle and began arguing.
“The car and the man were handed over to our staff and sent to the police station,” the police said. "Soon after, a group of eight to nine people arrived, confronted the complainant and asked why their associate had been taken to the station. Without listening to his explanation, they grabbed his shirt collar and attacked him with hands and sticks. When police staff intervened, they too were assaulted."
Head constable K. Suresh and constable Lakhan suffered injuries and were chased and attacked again while trying to escape. The attackers were identified as Rama Raj, Laxman, Anil, Sai and others. A case has been registered for assault and obstruction of public servants. Investigation is ongoing.
