Shiva temple built by Kakatiyas can be restored at Lalgadi Malakpet: KTCB

Warangal: Members of the Kotha Telangana Charitra Brundham (KTCB) found that the historic Shiva temple in Lalgadi Malakpet, Turkapally, Medchal district, is in shambles. The temple, originally constructed during the Kakatiya dynasty, was inspected on Monday by association convener Sriramoju Haragopal and other members.

Haragopal explained that the temple, built in traditional Kakatiya architectural style, features a Mukha Mandapam with 24 pillars, a Ranga Mandapam with 16 pillars, Antaralam, and Garbhagudi. Notably, the structure lacks a vimana (Gopuram) above the main shrine. The Mandapam and Antaralam house intricate 'Bhuvana' sculptures and Shaivadvarapalakas flanking the entrance. However, a broken ‘Pranali’ behind the Garbhagudi indicates past water drainage systems for Shiva Lingam abhishekam.
Upon inspection, the sanctum sanctorum was found completely excavated, with the Shivalinga, Panavattas, and Nandi sculptures missing — only the Bhuvana sculpture remains intact. Despite the temple's current neglected state, Haragopal expressed optimism about its restoration, stating that "with minor repairs and reconstruction, the temple can be restored to its former glory."
He proposed reassembling the missing Shivalinga, Panavattas, and Nandi sculptures, covering the sanctum sanctorum, and properly reinstating the Bhuvana sculpture. Haragopal urged the Telangana State Heritage Department and the state government to initiate restoration efforts to preserve the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
Supporting him, KTCB members Mohammed Nasiruddin and Mohammed Imran were also present during the visit. The association emphasised the temple's significance as a testament to Telangana's ancient artistry and religious traditions, calling for immediate action to safeguard this invaluable monument.
